Welcome to Orcutt Post 534 and The American Legion!

Although Orcutt Post 534 is a not-for-profit community-service organization and one of the nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide, for many in our local communities Orcutt Post 534 is The American Legion. The success of Post 534 in serving our veterans, their families and the community is also the success The American Legion.

As a new member of Orcutt Post 534 we understand things can be confusing at times. To help minimize the confusion our new members experience, we dedicate this portion of our web site to help you feel welcome and better understand our Post. Who is The American Legion?

2007 World Scout JamboreeThe American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization. A community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55 Departments -- one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.

The American Legion's national headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana, with additional offices in Washington, DC. In addition to thousands of volunteers serving in leadership and program implementation capacities in local communities to the Legion's standing national commissions and committees, the national organization has a regular full-time staff of about 300 employees.

The New Member Orientation developed by and for our Post is an important tool to help new members feel welcome, learn about the Legion and explain opportunities for you to help our Post grow and succeed. The foundation of this orientation is contained in our Post 534 Member Handbook which will be supplemented by video presentations, discussions and time to get acquainted with each other. The Post 534 Member Handbook includes information on the following topics:
